• Store food properly: Keep all food, pet food, and bird/animal feed in rodent-proof, airtight containers. 
• Manage trash: Use thick plastic or metal trash cans with tight lids and take your trash out frequently. Clean refuse areas regularly. 
• Clean up spills: Wipe up food and water spills immediately. 
• Limit outdoor food: Don't scatter food for birds or squirrels and clean up fallen fruit from trees. 
• Address water sources: Fix leaky pipes and drains. Eliminate any standing water inside or outside your home.

• Store materials properly:  Keep firewood, lumber, and other materials at least 12 inches off the ground and away from your home. 

 

Clean up existing droppings safely

• Wear protective gear: Put on rubber or plastic gloves before cleaning up droppings. 
• Disinfect the area: Spray the area with a household disinfectant or a bleach solution (1.5 cups bleach per gallon of water). 
• Remove droppings: Use paper towels or disposable rags to blot the droppings. 
• Do not vacuum: Avoid vacuuming the area until it's been disinfected and droppings have been removed to prevent the aerosolization of pathogens.
